Paul Foreman

Paul Foreman is a highly regarded and skilled field botanist and ecologist with over 23 years of experience in land management and nature conservation across a range of sectors and in a range of technical, strategic and management roles throughout Victoria and many other parts of Australia. Paul has an undergraduate degree in Forestry from the University of Melbourne and completed a Botany Masters of Science in Northern Plains Grassland ecology at La Trobe University in 1996.

Ecological monitoring

Today, the necessity to manage ecosystems adaptively, justify efforts to supporters and investors, and report back on our achievements, is driving us to ensure ecological monitoring is routinely incorporated into projects and conservation management systems. Ecological monitoring is a critical element of the adaptive management cycle; continually measuring the impact of our management actions on key values to ensure success. Paul is experienced in designing, establishing and re-assessing vegetation, species and ecological process dynamics in a range of ecosystems as well as analysing data and interpreting the results. Paul was instrumental in establishing Bush Heritage’s Ecological Outcomes Monitoring program – designed to measure the ecological impacts of conservation management on all reserves – while in a senior management role.

Services include: advising on the design of ecological monitoring programs appropriate for specific sites and objectives; planning and establishing monitoring sites tracking the dynamics of vegetation, target species (including threatened species) and ecological processes such as land surface condition and disturbance regimes; Baseline assessment; Collecting, collating, analysing and interpreting time series data for project evaluation and reporting, and adaptive management cycle feedback.
